Cross-Country Qualification Meet – Registration Form

If your child has participated regularly in our cross-country practices they will have received an important note about the Qualification Meet taking place October 5th.  Please ensure the bottom portion of the form is returned by Wednesday, September 30th to ensure that your child will be registered for the race.  Also be aware that the teachers will NOT have the necessary paperwork required to allow a child to go home with a parent other than their own. Children who come on the bus will return on the bus! Thanks for your help.  If you are making other arrangements you’ll need to see Mme. Sardella about the paperwork.

Our Cross-Country meet dates are quickly approaching. There are three meets:

Qualification Meet:  Monday, October 5th –Grade 1-6
Conference Finals: Thursday, October 15th (Grade 3-6 qualifiers from Qualification meet)
City Finals: October 22nd -City Finals (Grade 4-6 qualifiers from Conference Meet)

If your child qualifies to advance a note will be sent home.

Qualification Meet Information

When: Monday, October 5th
Time: Meet in the gym at 8:00. Primary students will return around noon, juniors around 2:00.
Where: Centennial Park (Rathburn and Renforth)
How: School Bus (there will be room for a few parents on but others will need to drive)
Cost: $2 for each runner (although this covers the bus it is averaged on the number of participants so all runners must contribute even if they are driving to the event)
What to bring: Please ensure children have clothing appropriate for the day’s weather (sunscreen, coat, rain gear etc.). It is a good idea to wear rain boots or have a change of sock and runners as the morning grass is wet.  We will be outside for the duration of the day rain or shine. Lunch and healthy snacks are needed.  Leave valuables and electronics at home.

Volunteers are needed to help supervise runners and organize at the event. Please let us know if you are able to help us.

Fall Sports Teams and Practices (Slo-Pitch and Cross Country)

Slo-Pitch Tryouts& Practices Grades 4-6

Boys – Wednesday and Thursday 7:45-8:30
Girls – Monday @ lunch 11:45-12:15 (then lunch supervised by Mrs. Ringler) and Thursday 3:30-4:30

Practices for those who make the team will continue on these days at these times.
Practices will be canceled if there is thunder & lightning or heavy rain. 

Cross Country Grade 1-6

Grade 1 –Day 1 and Day 3 (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays) at 11:45
Grade 2 –Day 2 and Day 4 (currently Wednesdays and Fridays) at 11:45

These practices will happen on school grounds.
Students will be supervised by a teacher after their running while they eat lunch.

Grade 3, 4, 5, and 6 –  Mondays and Fridays @8:00

These practices will happen on school grounds and at High Park. If your child arrives late and we are not at the school they will need to miss the practice and go home until school supervision begins at 8:45.

Please come to school with OUTDOOR RUNNING SHOES and a change of clothes. We will run in the rain but not thunder and lightening (indoor for grade 3-6). 

Before students can participate on any team they must have returned the Tryout and Participation Permission Form that was sent home at the beginning of the year, as well as students were given a permission form at school that must be returned!

Howard Spirit Wear – Try it on October 29th

There will be a try on date in the Howard Library
Wednesday October 29th from 5:30pm – 7pm

To place an order:
Read and fill out the attached order form carefully, including teacher name and area.

Select the sizing (Youth/Adult) and quantity clearly to avoid delays or complications with your order.
Cheques should be made out to 4th Quarter Inc.
Drop off your completed order form along with payment to the office by Thursday, October 30th.
Orders will be distributed to your child’s classroom by the second week of December.  

Howard Happenings: Last call for submissions!

Howard Happenings will publish its first issue for the 2014/2015 school year in November. We welcome submissions in English or French from all students. Great fall events to write about include: Halloween, Fall Fete, Terry Fox run, cross country running meets and anything else that inspires students. Photos and drawings are also welcome.

Submissions can be emailed to or dropped into the Howard Happenings folder in the office.

Howard Hawks Spirit Wear Available at Fall Fete!

This Saturday at the Fall Fete a booth will be set up for students and parents to order Howard Hawks spirit wear!  It’s a great way to show your school spirit, plus a portion of the money raised goes to the Howard Home and School Association.

Samples will be available to try on for sizing.

Please bring cash or your cheque book if you are interested in placing an order.

Howard Running Club is Back – Sign Up Information

RunnersThe Howard Running Club is back!

After another successful cross country season, the Howard Running Club is back for students interested in improving their physical fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Running Club will start right after the cross country is over, and students will run weekly until the end of the school year.

Here are the details:

  • Students in grades 1 and 2 will run on Tuesday mornings, meeting in the gym at 7:45am. The first run for these students will be Tuesday, October 7, 2014.
  • Students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 will run on Friday mornings, meeting in the gym at 7:45am. Their first run will be Friday, October 31, 2014 after Cross Country City Final.
  • All runners must arrive on time – no one can be left in the gym unsupervised.
  • One of the goals of the Running Club is to increase students’ endurance and fitness levels. Students must be prepared to run. We’ll be running from the school to High Park, following a route through the park, and then going back to school. Students should be able to run around 20 minutes without stopping.
  • Please note that we will be running outside, unless the weather is really bad (i.e. heavy rain or extreme cold). It’s very important that runners dress appropriately for the weather. As it gets colder, please make sure your child stays comfortable and warm by dressing in layers – for instance, a t-shirt covered with a turtleneck and a jacket or windbreaker (not a coat). In winter, students should also wear a hat and mittens or gloves. Of course, running shoes are a must (and don’t forget an extra pair of shoes in case the running shoes get wet).
  • It’s not a good idea to eat a heavy breakfast before running. Students should eat something light and then bring the remainder of their breakfast to finish when we return to school after the run.

If your child wants to participate in the Howard Running Club, please complete the form below (2014 Running Club letter) and return it to Mr. Jurek before the first scheduled runs. Also, we need parent volunteers to help supervise the students on the runs. If you would like to help out, please indicate your name and contact information on the form below.
