Next Week is Bike to School Week

The warmer weather and longer days make spring a great time of year to walk, bike or roll to school. Using these modes of active transportation helps to reduce congestion, improve air quality and promote health. Students who travel to school actively arrive at school more alert, focused and ready to learn.

For these reasons, our school is participating in Bike to School Week by organizing the following event. We invite your child to participate.

During the week of May 31st students will put a sticker on our tracking chart and will get a bonus ballot to entry in the draw prize box.

Our yearly BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY is May 31st.  All students who ride their bike this day will get a ballot for the draw prizes.  Upon arrival please lock the bike to one of the bike racks. Once these are full we ask that bikes get locked around the perimeter of the yard on the fence.  

Bike to School Week is a celebration of cycling and active transportation. Schools, public health offices, municipalities and regions across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area are coordinating activities focused on Bike to School Week, to promote and support cycling to school.

Jump Rope for Heart RESCHEDULED to Monday – WEAR RED

Hey Howard!
Monday is our Jump for Heart Day!  We are asking everyone to wear RED is support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Also, children are encouraged to bring their own skipping ropes.  Be sure to write name and area on the handle so any misplaced ropes can be returned.

Children are naturally energetic, but without encouragement they can become inactive. Today many children spend more and more time sitting – in class, using the computer or watching TV.  As a result, more than half of Canadian children aren’t active enough for optimal health and development.

 Skipping is a efficient and effective way to get a great workout in just 15-20 minutes.

 Here are a few of the benefits of skipping:
– helps to improve heart rate and blood pressure
– provides a full body workout:  core, legs, glutes, shoulders and arms
– improves flexibility, coordination and balance
– improves muscle tone in both the lower and upper body
– assists with weight loss
– it’s low cost and can be done anywhere
– and, it’s FUN!

Skipping is for everybody – young and old! Skipping is often overlooked, yet provides one of the easiest and most effective cardio workouts possible. It is used by boxers, and lots of other athletes like basketball, soccer, hockey and tennis stars as part of their regular fitness routines.

Jump Rope for Heart – This Friday

HOW’S YOUR FUNDRAISING GOING

There are 3 days remaining until our Jump Rope for Heart Event Day! Be sure to reach out to family and friends for donations.  Every donation helps us to reach our fundraising goal and to help save lives.  Online fundraising is a quick and easy way to receive donations. On Friday each class will participate in jumping stations for 40 minutes (FDK will do a half hour jumping games session).  If the weather does not permit the event will be rescheduled to Monday. 

If your child has a skipping rope (single or long) they are encouraged to bring them to school on Friday. Be sure their name and area are marked clearly on the rope (tape on handle is a good idea).

SHAC and Kids Cook to Care

A huge thank you to the families who supported our Snack-sized Soup sale and our Surprise Snack days.  With your support we were able to raise just over $700 for Kids Cook to Care. Check them out at http://www.kidscooktocare.com.

Our recipes were so well received that we’d like to share them with you.

Soup
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 can corn
1 can black beans
green peppers chopped
clove of garlic chopped
2-3 stalks sliced celery
1 tablespoon chill powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 box veggie stock
Place all ingredients in slow cooker and cook on high for 4-6 hours.

Surprise Snacks:
1) Air popped popcorn drizzled with coconut oil and sea salt
2) Air popped popcorn with Chex cereal, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins
3) Doritos air popped popcorn
*   8 cups freshly popped organic popcorn
*   ¼ cup nutritional yeast
*   1 teaspoon garlic powder
*   1 teaspoon onion powder
*   1 teaspoon cumin
*   1 teaspoon paprika
*   1½ teaspoon chili powder
*   ⅛ – ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
*   2 teaspoons salt
Instructions
1.  Combine nutritional yeast, garlic, onion, cumin, paprika, cayenne (if using), and salt in a spice or coffee grinder.
2.  Blend seasonings for about 15 seconds to make a fine powder.
3.  Sprinkle on the seasoning and toss to coat.
4) Air popped popcorn drizzled  with sunflower oil and cinnamon and raw cane sugar
