Parenting Workshop Monday April 29th 7-9pm

Hello again Howard friends and families,

Our last Parenting Workshop is Monday, April 29th 7-9pm, in the Howard Library.
With Lee Piepgrass, who lives in this neighbourhood, has worked for over 30 years as a parent counselor and behaviour consultant at ErinoakKids, Ontario’s largest Provincial Children’s Treatment Centre, with children and young people between the ages of 2 and 19.  She works to support families in such a way that people are treasured, relationships are robust, and everyone knows when to laugh. She has a PhD in Counselor Education from the University of Pittsburgh, and in the intervening years has learned a great deal from the people with whom she has been privileged to work.
Parenting Topic:
Looking Around the Corner: Preparing for Adolescence
A famous scientist, aged 70, was being interviewed on being awarded a prestigious prize for the body of his work. In the course of the interview, he was asked about his family – his wife and 3 children. “Now, about how long ago was it when your children were small?” he was asked. He replied, “Yesterday.”
It all goes by so quickly. We want to make every minute count. And this is even more important now, when we have to share our children with peers and screens and world events that can hardly be imagined, let alone anticipated.
This workshop will discuss some of the places parents can put their energies now, in order to reap maximum developmental and relationship rewards as time goes on.
Please join us and help to build community, meet a few new neighbours and discuss important matters concerning our kids.

Thank you,

Nicole Johnston (Isla’s mom).

2013-2014 Staffing Allocation‏

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We would like to share with you the class configuration for Howard P.S. for the 2013-2014 school year.

The attached staffing model is the result of a number of meetings with Staffing Committee members comprised of 3 parent representatives, 10 teachers and 2 administrators.  The Primary cap size mandated by the Ministry has put some limitations and restrictions on our classes.  At the system level, 90% of classes are capped at 20 with 10% exemptions allocated for classes up to 23.  We are pleased to have received an exemption for our Gr 2 French Immersion track.  The Board has also mandated schools to use a predetermined number of teachers for each division. The Board average of number of students in grades 4-6 will be 25.

We would like to thank all members of this committee for their hard work.

Attached is our staffing allocation and class configuration for 2013-2014.

A total of 21.5 teachers were used to accommodate classes in each of the English and French tracks.  The rest of the staffing allocation is for rotary and specialty teachers.  Principles of allocation are based on fairness, equity, and transparency.  The allocations are made within established limits and in compliance with Ministry and collective agreements.  We are committed to ensuring that both our English and French tracks grow and are successful and thriving.  This year, as last year, we are accepting optional attendance for the English track.  We are especially pleased to see our numbers in the JK/SK classes, which we hope provides a solid base for future years. Since teacher transfers are still happening for another month or so, it is not possible to announce teacher assignments with you at this time.

Yours in partnership,

R. Sardella
