The Howard School Council will hold it’s first meeting on September 25th at 7pm in the library. All parents and caregivers are welcome!
We meet once a month from September to May (excluding December and March) and provide a forum where parents, members of the school community, the school administration, and a teacher representative discuss school issues and ways to improve the school. We discuss issues such as how to help our children succeed at school, what our children are learning, the school budget, the school’s safety, renovations, extra-curriculars and more. In September, the parents who attend the first School Council Meeting elect a chair or co-chairs of the Council, as well as a secretary and treasurer. Any parent can run for these positions. For more information on these roles, please see the attachment or ask at the meeting. Meetings typically last from 7-8:30 pm with the October meeting sometimes going longer as it is our budget meeting. At the start of each meeting, the Principal or Vice-Principal reports on the state of the school and answers questions. An agenda will go out for the September meeting next week.
The Council oversees several committees: Arts, STEM,Tech, Mental Health and Well-being, Environment, Equity, and Sports. Council is supported by parents who run Fundraisers such as the Fall Fete in October, dance-athon in February, Parent Social in the spring and Pizza Fridays throughout the year. Fundraising provides Council with a budget which funds field trips, science initiatives, arts programming, new technology, new sports equipment and other projects. The parents run a School council website howardpublicschool.com where school announcements appear on the blog (which goes out in email form, and parents can sign up for on the homepage), extra-curricular announcements and other reminders are placed. We encourage all parents to sign up for the blog to help stay informed. The Council also supports movie nights in the gym, a year end pizza potluck, parenting social evenings, and other community events such as planting our school garden. We are always looking for new parents to come out and join us at our meetings. If you would like more information on any of our activities or want to get involved, please contact Michelle at mcbride.mclennan@gmail.com See you on September 25th at 7 pm in the library.
