Help the French as a Second Language Advisory Committee fight cuts to French Programming at the TDSB

Hello Community: Please find below the letter that Howard parent Mandy Moore sent on behalf of the French as a Second Language Advisory Committee concerning the TDSB’s proposed cuts to the French language programming in our school board.

Please note: There was a Finance, Budget, Enrolment Committee (FBEC) trustee meeting yesterday which is mentioned in the letter, but there will be another on Thursday, May 30 by 4:00 PM to speak on Monday, June 3. To register to speak for up to 5 minutes, please submit a delegation request form by 4:00 PM on Thursday, May 30, 2019. Let your voice be heard – How will TDSB cuts to French affect you and your family?
The FSLAC would like to thank the concerned parents and students who have already shared their stories with their Trustees and those who will be speaking at the TDSB Finance, Budget and Enrolment Committee (FBEC) today, Monday, May 27 at 4:30 PM (Delegations will begin at 6:00 PM). This is an open, public meeting and we encourage everyone to attend. If you cannot make it in person you can watch the live webcast, visit www.tdsb.on.caand follow the live broadcast link.
The voices of concerned parents, students, educators and community members are already being heard and making waves across Toronto and Canada. But we need people who have not yet come out to delegate in person or via email to provide feedback on the proposed 2019-20 budget.
Unfortunately, the TDSB is still proposing numerous cuts that will impact all students in French and the future of French programs.
September 2019 Cuts:
TTC ticketsfor approximately 1,500 secondary French Immersion/Extended students ($1.1 M)
French as a Second Language Central staffpositions (4 positions down to 3)September 2020 Cuts, but still part of 2019-20 budget:
• All French Immersion/Extended French bussing for approximately 4,800 elementary school students ($7.75 M)
• Supplementary French teacher positions ($12.15 M)

Provincial secondary class size average increases from  22 to 24 (2019), to 26 (2020), to 28 (2021)
Credits cancelled in Core, Extended and Immersion French in secondary, impacting completion of programs to Grade 12. Also, many remaining FSL classes combined. Full info here.
