On June 21, please join us for a STEM night for both parents and kids from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the gym. Like last year’s event, we’ll have one main activity, with a number of other tables set up.
**We need volunteers to help us with STEM activities – please email Liz if you’re interested (lizannephillips@gmail.com)**
For this year’s main event, we will harness the power of gravity to explore principles of physics by building and racing Kub Kars (aka Pinewood Derby cars). You may know Kub Kars from Scouts Canada – these are one and the same.
We’ll have a drag strip with advanced timing equipment to time your kar’s run down the ramp and compete head to head against others. For our STEM night we want everyone to see what can be done to tune your kar to improve the time taken to the finish gate.
There are 3 ways to get a free kit and take part:
- There are Kub Kar kits available for free in the Howard school office! Please pick one up and sign our logsheet so we know how many people have picked up kits. One kit per family please. Each kit comes with the instructions, 4 plastic wheels, 4 nails (axles) and the pre-drilled block of wood. In its simplest form, all you have to do is use a small hammer to drive the nail into the pre-drilled slots (making sure you have the wheel on the nail beforehand).
- For more information on customizing and some basic principles of Kub Kar physics, please see the handout attached. Also visit: https://tinyurl.com/yayz8h3a
- Come to the night and build a kar on the spot. A selection of kits will be available, along with various items to use on the kar to see how it impacts the time to the finish gate.
- In the classroom. Kits can be made available in the classroom. Speak to your child’s teacher if you would like to see them run this activity with the kids – they may need your help or ours, so please contact Adam (adam_noble@yahoo.com) for more information.

Hello, Is this age appropriate for my child in JK?
