SHAC Update

Hello Howard Families,

Thank you for you continued support with our Fresh Fruit Fridays. The kids really enjoy the tasty apples and pears. SHAC members were able to hear a little more about Erica’s Wish foundation and we are really hyped about raising money for such a worthy cause. Our next FFF is Friday, February 28th.

Primary house league will continue until March Break. Grade 1s are playing Noodleball, Grade 2s and 3s are playing a scooter board game called Handbird. We have been having tons of fun! The junior house league has wrapped up for now. A great group of girls and boys came out one night a week to improve their basketball skills. The boys and girls made some great improvements in their skills and had a great time as well.

Starting in January Howard started an iWalk club. Students all have a tracking card to see how often they walk to school. Once they have walked 10 times, they receive a golden shoe sticker. Students who can not walk are able to walk laps at recess or upon their arrival. Everyone has an opportunity to get a golden shoe. Walk to school or at school is great for daily physical activity, a healthier environment, safer streets, making friends and … having fun!

On Wednesday, February 26th Howard will host a Winter Walk to School Day. All students who walk to school will check in with a SHAC Special Events coordinator to get a special Winter Walk to School sticker. We will announce the class that has the highest percentage of participation.

On Thursday, March 6th Howard will be participating in the Great Big Crunch at 2:00pm. All students will meet in the yard and at the same time we’ll crunch into a tasty apple and listen to the crunch. The Great Big Crunch is an event to :

  • promote, celebrate and enjoy healthy snacking
  • highlight availability of local produce all year round
  • use fruits and vegetables as the centerpiece for activities on cooking and tasting, nutrition, soil and composting, sustainability, community development and more!
  • celebrate Nutrition Month!

Looking forward to hosting some fun events to help promote healthy lifestyle choices.
